Carolina Across 100 | Our State, Our Work

Client: UNC School of Government

About the Project

In response to the widespread havoc wreaked by COVID-19, the University of North Carolina launched the Carolina Across 100 initiative to address the disproportionate burdens caused by the pandemic. The first program of the five-year initiative—Our State,Our Work—brought together 20 community collaboratives to expand and deepen education and employment pathways for young adults aged 16-24 who are out of school and work. According to former Chancellor Kevin M. Guskiewicz, “Carolina Across 100 will leverage the University’s expertise and research and work with communities in all 100 counties across the state to address those issues. This initiative is fundamental to who we are as a university. It builds upon our commitment to public service while also preparing the next generation of leaders to solve the grand challenges of our time.”

Before producing this video, we had worked with the UNC School of Government to provide event coverage of individual forums. They wanted to a create a recap video for the year-long program that both showed the work done by the teams while also showing why this work mattered. We truly believe that stories are best told through the voices of the people who are affected, so we proposed traveling throughout the state of North Carolina to document youth whose lives were improved by the community initiatives that participated in Our State, Our Work. The School of Government loved this idea and collaborated with us to make this video happen. In the end we were able to meet two Opportunity Youth and share a small slice of their stories.

After producing this video, the School of Government also commissioned us to produce a recap video of their next initiative—Our State, Our Wellbeing—which focused on mental health. You can see that video here:
